Area History

Mining claims within Big Oak Flat & Garrote were initially restricted to ten feet square. By 1851, the local mining laws were relaxed, allowing each miner fifty yards in length up and down a prospective creek.

By the 1870’s, Garrote now called Groveland, had been transformed from dozens of bars and bordellos to a quiet community serving the nearby ranches and a trickle of tourist taking the new Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite. Groveland experienced a second gold rush with the advent of deep shaft mines & milling operations that was over in 1914. A third boom began in 1916 – 1925 with the approval to build the Hetch Hetchy Water Project which supplies San Francisco with its drinking water as of today. Groveland was selected as headquarters for the massive project. As the Hetch Hetchy construction activity shifted westward, Groveland experienced an economic slump. During the Great Depression, Groveland was once again reduced to a sleepy little ranching town. In fact, eventually all of the construction associated buildings were lost through fire and demolition. However, downtown Groveland still contains some fine examples of commercial buildings dating from that time.

After WWII, tourism took an impressive upward swing. A healthy national economy, greater mobility and greater interest in the Mother Lode brought an increasing number of travelers to Groveland. Presently, this region has taken its place alongside Yosemite National Park as a popular tourist attraction.

Today Groveland offers all the comforts of home. Bed & breakfast Inns, hotels, fine dining, night life, shops, museum, library, park, grocery & general stores and most of all, Nature’s majestic beauty. With a current population of approx. 3000’ we find a combination of full and part time residents enjoying the mild year round weather. Winter daytime temperatures average in the 50’s and Summer daytime temperatures average in the 80’s. Spring and fall temperatures are usually in the 70’s .

At approx. 2800’, Groveland does experience some snow but due to the mild temperatures it usually is gone by the next day. Locals like to say “we enjoy the snow’s beauty without the bother”.

Summertime visitors to Groveland can enjoy all types of outdoor activities that include: golf, hiking, water sports and for the adventuresome, an outing to Rainbow Pools , just east of Groveland. The Pools are a favorite swimming hole for locals and visitors alike.

Down Priest Grade to Moccasin Point Marina (15 minutes from Groveland) you will find Lake Don Pedro which is 21 miles long and 17.5 miles from one marina to the other. You never feel crowded on a lake this size. Experience cruising through the canyons and finding a waterfall to anchor and enjoy your picnic lunch .
